One of my goals for the remainder of 2018 is to create some music videos. I don’t have a big budget (well… any budget), so I found a collection of cheap to make and cool music videos from around the web.
The criteria isn’t genre specific, it just has to be cool and cheap to make. I’m not including lyric videos – it has to be an actual video. There are a few videos that are just the singer on a black backdrop / in a room, which I’m not including because they’re kinda boring.
Hurts – Wonderful Life
This was shot using a single video camera. They put some thought into the story for the video and got some people to act out the narrative, which came together pretty nicely.
Alan Walker – Faded
This was made by a professional video production company, but I don’t see why a couple of guys with some video skills couldn’t put something together. It has a single actor and a simple narrative – love this.
Joe Bonamassa – Drive
This is the standard setup for a rock / metal video. A narrative of some sort cut with studio footage. The narrative is super simple, two people driving around. There are some lights behind JB in the studio. Cool idea.
The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony
Dude walking around on the street. Maybe he should have considered a career in ice hockey, his ability to body-check strangers is strong in this video.
Sinead O Connor – Nothing Compares 2 U
Her face, cut with shots of her wondering around. Pretty simple and cool.
Lana Del Ray – Born To Die
This video is fucking cool. It’s probably the hardest one from the group. We have 3-4 scenes. It’s got a pretty dark narrative, like her songs. Some of the car shots look like they might be modelled or CGI. Some of the camera work is fancy, but the ideas could be recreated with a bit of thought.
Lorde – Tennis Court
Weird one. We only see her singing the harmony vocal. The rest of the time she does nothing. Cool idea. The studio lights burst on and off.
Will Pharrel – Happy
Simple shots of people wondering about and dancing. Effective.
Passenger – Let Her Go
Some live footage mashed up. Classic minimalist music video.
Sophie Lloyd – Delusions
This video is super simple. Some close ups of Sophie shredding, some nice shots of her guitar in the forest. Awesome. It has 1.5M views – goes to show that you don’t need a fancy video and a mega budget to make something good.
Lindsey Stirling – Crystallize
This is the video that “broke” Lindsey Stirling. It’s pretty cool. Big flowing arcs of camera angles and Lindsey tearing it up on her violin with her choreographed dance moves. Badass. It was done by one guy with a camera who believed in her. Really cool.
Well.. I know what I need to be working on over the next few months. Taking some inspiration from these videos and creating my own! If you have any other recommendations for cool music videos that were made on a budget, leave them in the comments!
