Yesterday I was talking about how awesome American muscle cars are, and I mentioned a dream I had, of travelling from city to city for a few years, staying in each place for a few weeks to a few months at a time. And I was wondering… what do I need to do, in order to create that?
What would I take with me? Muscle cars have a decent amount of space, but not a huge amount, certainly not enough space for everything I currently have. When I caught myself having this thought, it occurred to me that I have too much stuff. Stuff that I do not need, that is not serving any purpose in my life. Books, Vinyl records (I don’t have a player…) old sports equipment.
So I started making a list of things I would need. If I’m travelling a lot, I would need to adopt a fairly minimalist lifestyle. A mental block I had to doing this earlier was “What would I do with my stuff?”. Which… when I think about it, is pretty ridiculous.
Here are the things I think I would need:
- I thought I might need a bass guitar (very useful for songwriting), but found a YouTube tutorial on making your electric guitar sound like a bass guitar.
- Guitar interface
- Headphones / speakers. There are small sized monitor speakers that pack a punch.
- Stand for making videos
- Maybe one studio light?
- A few books
- The music theory books I’m currently studying
- Maybe a Kindle for any reading for fun I want to do
- Some tools for the car
I started to read up a but on minimalism and found this great summary:
At its core, minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of everything that distracts us from it.
I spent the last 30 minutes or so reading the articles at https://www.becomingminimalist.com and it has some great advice and ideas.
So the next question is… how do I start embracing this? Whenever I teach my students something new, I break it down into steps. The idea is to make it easy to get started. So any easy way to get started on this, is every weekend, to get rid of a few things. Whether that means putting it up for sale, putting it in the bin (do I really need my university notes from studying four years of astrophysics…?), or giving it to a charity shop, I have to start clearing stuff out.
Maybe I can make a few quid from it too?
The first thing to go this weekend, will be some Rush vinyl that I have. It’s really cool… but I haven’t listened to it for several years… as I don’t have a record player. Facepalm.
I have a few sentimental things I will keep, some of my favourite childhood books, philosophy books and physics text books, a couple of things my Dad brought me back from his travels and my first guitar. Those can go either into storage or I can get away with keeping them at my parents place. My guitar amp / rack would go there too, replacing it with software modelling for practice, writing and recording demos.
I’ll post the updates as I go.
